The Rev. Lydia Ruenzel

What do you really do at Becoming Church?

I'm one of the (volunteer) ministers so I sometimes lead different parts of worship like communion, preaching, prayer or scripture reading. But I mostly just get to know people and hang out. :)

Why Jesus?

This is a tricky one for me! I have struggled on and off with Jesus for a very long time and I'm currently working through separating out who Jesus really is versus how people have used Jesus to convey their own messages and agendas. I don't like the Jesus that's been used to oppress others or as reasoning why certain kinds of people can't be welcomed. I DO, however, LOVE the Jesus who is in the Gospel. The one who sits with anyone, who loves being on the fringes of society, who calls out power, who fights for justice, who thinks everyone is Beloved in the eyes of God, and the one who was crucified, died, and buried. I love that last part especially because of what follows—the resurrection! The ultimate hope we have in this life that nothing that ever feels like the worst thing ever will be the end; we are promised and shown over and over again that God, hope, and love prevail. And that's something I can believe in and need to believe in.

What's your favourite food?

Depends on the day, but I'm always down for a good Vietnamese fried spring roll, ice cream, or anything with rice.

Where'd you go to school?

The University of British Columbia and Vancouver School of Theology

Favourite hymn/worship song? Why?

Spirit, Spirit of Gentleness -- it was my favourite as a young child in the pews and the first (and quite possibly only) hymn I learned to play on the violin. It's beautiful, it's emotional, it tells the story of scripture. :)

You're stranded on a desert island and you're so glad you packed your...

water, pillow (I'm very particular), and my family? (can I get away with that being one item?)

What are you watching/listening to right now?

Currently watching The Residence on Netflix -- I love a good mystery, and currently listening to whatever likes songs come on my Spotify (a mix of alternative rock and folk rock and oldies from the 60s and 70s.
